Lions vs. Bengals

With the first game in the books, here are a few of my thoughts from the game.

Offense: The starters looked great. Two possessions, 10 plays, and 2 TDs. Pretty good line! The bright spot on those two drives were Matt Stafford. He looked very comfortable in the pocket, going 6/7 for 71 yards with 2 TD passes. Calvin Johnson played just one drive despite favoring an ankle injury this week, 2 catches for 37 yards and a TD.

Area of Improvement: The Offensive Line-They pass protected well but they need to improve the run blocking. Jahvid Best didn't have any holes to run through. This unit however could improve when Jeff Backus returns from injury. Something to keep an eye on.

Defense: The defense looked ok. The defensive backs looked improved from last season. Couldn't see much from the new linebacking core because they didn't implement any blitz packages. One thing that surprised me was the play from the defensive line. They gave up way too many rushing yards. To be honest they looked a bit rusty. Nothing to be too worried about.

Keep an Eye Out: Coming into training camp Erik Coleman & Amari Spievey were set to battle for the other safety spot. The battle may be over after week one. Spievey looked good. He was all over the field making plays. I hear before the lockout he took tape home to study and get better. Well it looks to have worked. Pay attention to that competition.

Here it is, the CBA

The NFL owners have agreed, the players ratified it, and now we're in our first week of preseason ball. For you reading buffs, here is the CBA in it's entirety.

2011 NFL Rules Changes

Football was officially back yesterday with five preseason games on the schedule. Tonight there are 10 games on tap, including the Detroit Lions against the Cincinnati Bengals at 7:30.

In an effort to prepare the players for the upcoming season, the NFL put together a video of the all the rule changes for this upcoming season. The video has been released for the fans to see. Here is a link to the video of all the rules changes.

*Note: Lions fans, try not to throw the computer when you see the Calvin Johnson TD no TD replay.
